Case Study 3 - Jane Clarkson, Butterlands Farm, Macclesfield

Jane and her husband run an organic livestock farm in Wincle, Macclesfield.

Jane identified that a farmers market may be suitable for the area, and in June 2005 she held her first event, on farm. With over 500 visitors, Jane illustrated that marketing is key to a successful diversification enterprise.

Having such success at her first event, Jane wanted to keep the momentum and build upon it. It was at this point Jane contacted the REG team. An adviser visited the farm to discuss her ideas. The adviser identified that the North West Farm Tourism Initiative may be a possible grant source to develop facilities on site, including information to educate the visitors and to further assist with marketing the events. Jane is currently considering if they want to explore this grant opportunity.

In October 2005, Jane was awarded the REG Rural Women’s Award at the event held in Byley. Jane was given the award for the active and varied promotion routes used for her events, along with her desire to educate visitors and promote local food production.
