The Cope family identified that their unique farm location on an important stretch of the Llangollen canal could provide the perfect opportunity to explore diversification developments away from the core dairy herd.

Following initial talks with British Waterways, and many months of research and site visits to similar canal marinas throughout the UK, the family worked closely with planners, consultants and local rural businesses to develop a strong business case for a 300 berth marina and ensure the project was sensitive to the local community. The research demonstrated a strong demand for such a facility and with the support of grant aid, the project was financially viable. Planning permission was granted in early 2004.
DEFRA recognised the unique tourism potential, significant job creation and support to the local rural community of this project, and through assistance from the team at REG and a local agent, the family developed a strong business case and DEFRA funding was confirmed in October 2005.
March 2006....
The marina is now taking shape, in anticipation of it being completed by the summer. The Copes have signed up as members of the Visit Chester and Cheshire tourist board, and are getting stuck into developing a website and associated marketing materials - watch this space for updates on the ongoing development.
